I hope I didn’t scare you away with the title of this post, but since it’s “back to school” month I decided to share how I find time to maintain a solid workout schedule during the crazy semester. Like most college students, I work and go to school full time. Over the summer it was 100x easier to make it to the gym for a long and grueling session because I was only working part-time, and I was obviously not taking any summer classes because why would anyone do that to themselves???? So, I had all the time in the world to bust my butt at the gym. Oh how that beautiful story has changed. Now, I have been back to school for two days and already have a billion things to do. It’s swell being an English major. While I was sitting in class the first day, instead of listening to the lecture about Shakespeare, I was thinking about how the hell I was going to have time to go to the gym! Then soon after I realized that I am fortunate to have a job that allows me to get off at a wonderfully decent time, and that it’s not the end of the world if I can’t make it to the gym everyday. I also realized that I might not have time to write a blog every single week but I will try my best. Anywho, in tonight’s post I am going to give you my own personal tips and tricks to stay active during a hectic work or school week whether it’s outside, at home, or at the gym.
First things first, it’s important to remember that the gym is only 10%, maybe 20% of losing or maintaining weight and the rest relies on your diet. So if you can only make it to the gym three times a week it’s okay! Just make sure you go hard or go home. Also import to note, you do not need a gym to get a good workout.
Tip #1 If you have a sit down job or you are constantly sitting in classes, whenever you have the opportunity, get that butt up and moving.
Making sure that you keep your body moving is important especially if you are constantly sitting down. Typically for myself, I am sitting a lot because of school and driving back and forth everywhere. Thankfully my new job allows me to move around more, but my old job was sit down. If you have a sit down job, I would suggest making time to go for a 30 minute walk every single day. If you are constantly sitting at school and work, I would recommend parking far to force you to walk more or walking in between breaks at school (if you have any), and like I previously wrote, making time to go on walks.
Tip #2 Getting ahead with studying & school work to have more free time.
This one is more for college students who have part-time jobs. Not only is it important to stay ahead with school work because it shows responsibility, but it is also important because it allows for more flexibility with time. For me personally, I have always been an over achiever who gets things done ahead of time. This has taken stress off my shoulders by more than 50% and it has also allowed me to make time to workout in the gym more. If you are a procrastinator…stop procrastinating!
Tip #3 You do not need a gym to stay active and get in a great workout, so stop making excuses.
Whether you hate going to the gym, you don’t have a gym membership, or you simply do not have time to drive to the gym for rush hour, this one is for you. Although a gym has more equipment for your workout, the gym sucks sometimes! Let’s face it. The gym is not always the most convenient place to be after work or school. Trust me I understand. So if you don’t have access to a gym or you just don’t feel like going, you need to grab those dumbbells and workout at home. If you have a smartTV that has access to YouTube, find a video to follow along to; or if you follow someone on social media who specializes in home workouts; or if you need to do something quick, do Tabata or HIIT. If you take away anything from tip #3, trust me when I say to invest in yourself and buy a set a dumbbells. They will come in handy when you don’t want to make it to the gym. Also, body weight workouts are cool, but they do not build muscle nearly as much as when using weights.
Tip #4 Dance!
I’m not crazy I promise. This is probably my favorite of all time because I love to dance. Not only will you get your heart rate up instantly, but you will be happy. It is impossible to dance and be angry. Dancing is also fun, and taking the time to be silly, laugh, and have fun will make your day a little better.
Well that’s all for now! I have more tips and tricks up my sleeve but I can’t give them all away… but maybe I will in the future. I also want to add that I will be posting my workouts more frequently, so make sure you keep on the lookout. I hope you enjoyed, and as always thank you for reading 🙂
